The Royal Newfoundland Regiment

Historical sketch of the military operations of The Royal Newfoundland Regiment in Gallipoli and on the Western Front during the Great War (1914-1918). Together with military records and photographs where obtainable of the men of the first contingent, known as "The First Five Hundred," or "The Blue Putees." They fought in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915. The regiment was virtually wiped out at Beaumont Hamel on July 1, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. July 1 is known as Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. The military operations of the heroic, fighting battalion that represented Newfoundland among the gallant and victorious troops of the British Empire in the greatest war in history.
